NERMAP AS A RESPONSE PLAN TO THE DROUGHT

The Government of Swaziland (GOS) declared the drought as a national emergency situation on 18th February 2016 to respond to the needs of 320 000 people- about 26 per cent of the total population who require immediate food and water assistance. The figure of the population who will require food assistance has been estimated to rise to 500 000 people by December 2016-which is half of the population.

Six key sectors were prioritized to respond to the drought emergency, namely Agriculture and food security; WASH; Education; Health and Nutrition; Social Protection; and Coordination (NERMAP 2016).

Almost the entire Swazi Nation, to varying degrees, is affected by the present drought, caused primarily by the cyclical dry weather phenomenon known as El Nino.
